At Mainely Standards, our puppies have their tails docked by our veterinarian during the first few days of life.
Tail docking is a long-standing practice in Standard Poodles and remains part of the breed standard recognized by many kennel clubs and breed organizations. While opinions on tail docking vary, we believe it is important to explain why we have chosen to continue the practice.
Historically, Poodles were bred as working water retrievers. A shorter tail was thought to reduce the risk of injury while moving through brush, rough terrain, and water during hunting and retrieving activities.
Today, most Standard Poodles live as family companions rather than working retrievers. However, tail injuries can still occur, particularly in active dogs. As with dew claw removal, our goal is to reduce the risk of painful injuries that may require veterinary treatment later in life.
The procedure is performed by our veterinarian during the first few days after birth when puppies are very young and heal quickly. We believe this approach is preferable to addressing a significant tail injury later in life when anesthesia and a more involved surgical procedure may be required.
We understand that reasonable people can have different opinions regarding tail docking. As breeders, our responsibility is to make decisions we believe are in the best long-term interests of our dogs. After careful consideration and consultation with our veterinarian, tail docking remains part of our puppy care program.
As with every aspect of our breeding program, our goal is to support the long-term health, comfort, and well-being of the dogs we raise.
