Smokey Invasion (Smokey)

Smokey earned his name long before he ever joined the Mainely Standards pack. We picked him up in the Smoky Mountains during Jeep Invasion weekend, and the name simply stuck. Looking back, it fits him perfectly.

If there is one thing Smokey believes, it is that every obstacle is simply a puzzle waiting to be solved.

Smokey is one of the younger members of the Mainely Standards pack and brings a combination of intelligence, energy, curiosity, and determination that keeps everyone on their toes. At just over a year old, he is still very much a puppy at heart and approaches every day as an opportunity for adventure.

As a black Standard Poodle, Smokey represents an important part of the future of our program. Along with his striking appearance, he possesses many of the traits we value most in the breed: intelligence, athleticism, confidence, and an eagerness to engage with both people and other dogs.

Smokey’s intelligence became apparent early, particularly when it came to crates. Most dogs view a crate as a place to rest. Smokey viewed it as a challenge. After repeatedly escaping traditional crate setups, he eventually graduated from opening crates to testing their structural integrity. At one point, we found ourselves reinforcing parts of his crate with zip ties while waiting for a replacement that offered a greater challenge.

The crate he uses today features a latch system that requires turning a knob before the door can be opened. Fortunately for us, Smokey has not yet figured out how to operate it. Unfortunately for us, experience suggests he may still be working on the problem.

When Smokey isn’t conducting engineering experiments, he spends his time doing what young Standard Poodles do best: keeping everyone moving. His energy is contagious, and he has a remarkable ability to convince the rest of the pack that whatever he’s doing is worth investigating. Whether he’s playing, exploring, or encouraging others to join him in some new adventure, Smokey rarely sits still for long.

Despite his talent for finding creative solutions to problems of his own making, Smokey is a wonderful example of the intelligence and enthusiasm that make Standard Poodles such remarkable companions. He is confident, playful, affectionate, and always eager to see what comes next.

At Mainely Standards, we often joke that some dogs learn from us while others teach us. Smokey has certainly taught us a few things, including the importance of sturdy crates, secure latches, and never underestimating a determined Standard Poodle.
