Every story has a beginning, and for Mainely Standards, that beginning was Mac.

Long before there were litters, health testing, pedigrees, websites, or plans for a breeding program, there was an apricot Standard Poodle with a larger-than-life personality who convinced Brian that life was simply better with a poodle in it.

When Carrie met Brian, Mac was already part of the package. In many ways, he became the foundation upon which everything else was built. While Mainely Standards may not have existed yet, Mac was already demonstrating the intelligence, companionship, humor, and loyalty that would eventually lead us down the path of raising and breeding Standard Poodles.

Mac never had any interest in being just a dog. He wanted to be involved in whatever was happening. Whether it was following his people from room to room, supervising projects, or making sure no activity took place without his approval, Mac believed participation was both his right and his responsibility.

Like many Standard Poodles, he possessed an uncanny ability to understand routines, anticipate plans, and somehow always know when something interesting was about to happen. He formed strong bonds with his family and carried himself with the confidence of a dog who knew exactly where he belonged.

As the years passed and the Mainely Standards family grew, Mac remained a constant presence. New dogs arrived, puppies were born, and the pack expanded, but Mac never lost his place as one of the cornerstones of our story.

While many of our dogs have contributed to the development of our program, Mac’s contribution was different. He didn’t help shape the future of Mainely Standards through breeding. He helped create the idea in the first place.

Every puppy, every litter, and every success that followed can trace part of its story back to the apricot Standard Poodle who started it all.

At Mainely Standards, Mac will always hold a special place in our hearts. He wasn’t just the first dog. He was the reason there was ever a second.
