Grooming Guidance for Your Standard Poodle

At Mainely Standards, grooming is an important part of keeping your poodle healthy, comfortable, and looking their best. While Standard Poodles are known for their low-shedding coats, that comes with a tradeoff: regular grooming is essential.

We groom our own dogs and understand the unique grooming needs of the breed. Whether you choose to learn grooming yourself or work with a professional groomer, establishing a consistent routine will make life much easier for both you and your dog.

Standard Poodles require regular brushing, nail care, ear care, dental care, and routine haircuts. One of the most challenging periods for many owners occurs between 6 and 12 months of age when the puppy coat transitions to the adult coat. During this stage, increased brushing is often necessary to prevent tangles and matting.

Good grooming is about more than appearance. Proper coat care, clean ears, trimmed nails, and healthy teeth all contribute to your dog’s overall health and quality of life.

The sections below highlight some of the most important areas of routine poodle grooming and why they matter.
