OFA Evaluations

At Mainely Standards, OFA evaluations are an important part of our health testing program. While DNA testing helps us understand a dog’s genetic health, OFA evaluations provide information about the physical structure and health of a dog’s joints.

The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) evaluates X-rays to help identify conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia. These evaluations provide breeders and owners with valuable information about joint health and can help guide responsible breeding decisions.

For hips, OFA reviews X-rays and assigns ratings ranging from Excellent, Good, and Fair to varying levels of dysplasia. Elbows are evaluated for abnormalities and graded as Normal or assigned a level of dysplasia if concerns are identified.

Final OFA certifications are issued after a dog reaches 24 months of age, when the joints have fully developed. The evaluation process involves specialized X-rays that are reviewed by veterinary radiologists through the OFA.

No test can eliminate all health risks, but OFA evaluations are one of the tools we use to better understand the health of our dogs and support our goal of producing healthy, well-structured Standard Poodles for future generations.
