Doodle or Poodle?

We are often asked about the difference between Standard Poodles and popular Poodle mixes such as Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, and Bernedoodles.

The truth is that many doodles are wonderful family dogs. However, at Mainely Standards, we have chosen to focus on Standard Poodles because we value the consistency and predictability that come with a well-established breed.

When choosing a Standard Poodle, families have a much better understanding of what to expect in terms of size, temperament, energy level, coat type, and trainability. Generations of selective breeding have helped create a breed known for intelligence, versatility, athleticism, and companionship.

Coat type is another important consideration. While doodles are often marketed as low-shedding or hypoallergenic, coat type can vary significantly depending on the individual dog and the breeds involved. Standard Poodles offer a more predictable coat that sheds very little, although regular grooming remains an important part of ownership.

Health testing is equally important. Responsible breeders of any breed or mix should perform appropriate health testing. At Mainely Standards, health testing is a key part of our breeding program and one of the many tools we use to help produce healthy puppies.

Perhaps the biggest reason we love Standard Poodles is their versatility. They are intelligent, eager to learn, athletic enough for outdoor adventures, and affectionate enough to become true members of the family.

For our family, the choice was simple. We chose Standard Poodles, and after sharing our lives with them, we wouldn’t want it any other way.
