Dew Claw Removal

At Mainely Standards, our puppies have their dew claws removed by our veterinarian during the first few days of life.

This decision is not made lightly. Dew claw removal is a surgical procedure, and we understand that reasonable people can have different opinions on the subject. After careful consideration and discussions with our veterinarian, we have chosen to remove dew claws because we believe it helps reduce the risk of future injuries and complications.

For active dogs, dew claws can occasionally become caught on objects, torn during play, or injured while running and exploring. These injuries can be painful and often require veterinary treatment, anesthesia, and a longer recovery period later in life.

When performed by a veterinarian during the first few days after birth, puppies generally heal quickly and experience far less discomfort than an older dog undergoing a similar procedure following an injury.

In addition to reducing the risk of injury, dew claw removal can simplify grooming and help prevent debris from becoming trapped around the nail.

While not everyone agrees on dew claw removal, it is a decision we have made as part of our overall puppy care program. As with many aspects of responsible dog ownership, our goal is always to make decisions that support the long-term health, comfort, and well-being of our dogs.
