Why Crate Training?
Crate training can be one of the most valuable tools available to both dogs and their families when introduced properly and used with patience.
At its best, a crate becomes much more than a place to contain a dog. It becomes a safe place. A place to rest, relax, and step away from the activity of the day.
Crate training can help with:
Housebreaking
Establishing routine and structure
Preventing destructive behavior when supervision isn’t possible
Travel and veterinary visits
Teaching puppies how to settle and rest
The key is making the crate a positive experience. A crate should never be used as punishment. Instead, it should be introduced gradually and associated with comfort, rest, treats, toys, and positive experiences.
At Mainely Standards, our puppies are introduced to crates as a litter. Initially, they are free to come and go as they please. As they grow, the crate becomes part of their daily routine and eventually a place where they are comfortable resting on their own.
As the puppies mature, they begin spending time in individual crates so they can develop confidence and learn to settle independently. By the time they leave for their forever homes, the crate is already a familiar and comfortable part of their world.
It is not necessary for every family to continue using a crate forever. However, many of our puppies continue to view their crate as a safe place long after they no longer need one. Don’t be surprised if years later you find your dog quietly slipping into an open crate for an afternoon nap.
A crate should never be a prison. When introduced properly, it becomes a bedroom.
