Every Puppy Has a Story

Raising puppies is incredibly rewarding, but it also comes with challenges, surprises, and occasional setbacks. Over the years, we’ve learned that successful puppy raising often comes down to paying attention, acting early, and doing whatever is necessary to help a puppy succeed.

When One Puppy Needed Extra Help

In one litter of eleven puppies, there were simply more puppies than available nursing spots. By weighing the puppies daily and carefully monitoring their growth, we identified one little puppy that needed additional support. Through supplemental bottle feeding and close observation, that puppy eventually caught up to their littermates and grew into a healthy, thriving companion.

In another litter, a puppy wasn’t gaining weight as expected despite having plenty of opportunities to nurse. Once again, daily monitoring allowed us to intervene early and provide the extra nutrition needed to help that puppy succeed.

The Puppy with the Broken Leg

At six weeks old, one puppy experienced every breeder’s nightmare: a broken leg. While we never learned exactly how it happened, immediate veterinary care and careful management gave that puppy the opportunity to heal completely.

After several weeks of recovery, the puppy returned to normal activity and eventually found a loving family who appreciated just how resilient that little dog had been.

Sometimes Blood Looks Worse Than It Is

One day we noticed what appeared to be blood in several water bowls. After a quick investigation, we discovered the source: a tiny cut on the tip of a puppy’s ear.

The injury itself was minor, but it served as another reminder of how closely puppies must be monitored. Fortunately, the little patient was quickly cleaned up and back to playing with littermates as though nothing had happened.

Loki’s Hookworm Journey

When Loki joined our family, he brought an unexpected challenge with him: hookworms.

Treating Loki meant more than helping him recover. It meant protecting the rest of the pack as well. Separate potty breaks, careful cleanup, disinfecting surfaces, and constant monitoring became part of our daily routine until he was healthy again.

Today, Loki is a healthy, thriving member of our family, and his experience reinforced the importance of proactive care and attention to detail.

Preparing Puppies for Their Future Families

Not every challenge involves illness or injury. Sometimes the goal is simply helping a puppy prepare for the life ahead.

When families have specific goals or concerns, we often spend additional time introducing puppies to new experiences, people, environments, car rides, leash walking, and basic training concepts. These personalized efforts help create smoother transitions and more confident puppies.

The common thread through all of these stories is simple: paying attention.

Whether it’s monitoring weight gain, noticing a small injury, managing a health issue, or helping a puppy prepare for a specific home, success often comes from identifying small problems before they become large ones.
