Why Does My Puppy Bite Everything?

If you’ve brought home a young puppy, chances are you’ve already asked yourself this question.

One minute they’re chewing on a toy, the next they’re attached to your shoelaces, biting your ankles, dragging a blanket across the room, or attacking the broom while you’re trying to sweep.

It can feel like they’re determined to chew everything except the toys you bought for them.

The good news is that this is completely normal.

Puppies Explore with Their Mouth

Just like babies use their hands to explore the world, puppies use their mouths.

Every object feels different.

Shoes smell different than blankets.

Blankets feel different than rubber toys.

A wooden chair leg feels different than a rope toy.

They’re learning about their environment one bite at a time.

Teething Makes It Worse

During teething, puppies are also looking for relief.

That doesn’t mean every toy feels good.

Some days they’ll want something soft.

Other days they’ll prefer firm rubber or a toy they can really sink their teeth into.

Redirection Works Better Than Punishment

Simply telling a puppy “No” rarely teaches them what you do want.

Instead, calmly remove the inappropriate item, offer an appropriate chew toy, and spend a minute making that toy interesting.

The goal isn’t simply to stop chewing.

The goal is to teach your puppy what belongs to them.

Manage the Environment

Success becomes much easier if tempting items aren’t available.

Put shoes away.

Keep laundry picked up.

Limit access to rooms where your puppy can make poor choices.

Every correct choice helps build a lasting habit.

Will They Grow Out of It?

Most puppies naturally bite less as they mature.

What doesn’t automatically disappear are the habits they practiced while they were growing.

That’s why consistency during the first few months matters so much.

The biting phase is temporary.

The lessons they learn during it often last a lifetime.
