Health Testing – Why It Matters
Health Testing – Why It Matters
At Mainely Standards, health testing is an important part of our breeding program. While no breeder can guarantee a puppy will never experience health issues, careful health screening helps us make informed breeding decisions and reduce the risk of inherited conditions.
Standard Poodles are generally a healthy breed, but like all breeds, they can be predisposed to certain hereditary conditions. Through health testing, DNA screening, and OFA evaluations, we work to better understand the health of our dogs before they become part of our breeding program.
Health testing helps identify potential concerns such as hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and von Willebrand’s Disease. By understanding these risks, breeders can make responsible decisions that support the long-term health of future generations.
Just as importantly, health testing reflects our commitment to responsible breeding practices. Our goal is not simply to produce puppies, but to produce healthy, well-socialized companions that will be cherished members of their families for years to come.
Health testing is only one part of responsible breeding, but it’s an important one. The articles in our Health & Care section explore the specific tests, certifications, and preventive care practices we use, along with why each one matters when planning a breeding program and raising healthy puppies.
