Standard Poodles are often considered one of the most allergy-friendly dog breeds because they shed very little and typically produce less airborne dander than many other breeds. However, no dog is completely hypoallergenic, as allergens can also be found in saliva and skin.
Many families with allergies find they do very well with Standard Poodles, but we always recommend spending time with the breed before making a commitment if allergies are a concern.
What Grooming Needs Should I Expect?
One of the tradeoffs for the Standard Poodle’s low-shedding coat is regular grooming. Without routine maintenance, the coat can become tangled and matted.
We recommend:
Regular brushing to prevent mats and tangles.
Routine bathing to keep the coat and skin healthy.
Professional grooming or home grooming every 4 to 6 weeks.
Regular nail trimming.
Routine ear care to help prevent infections.
At Mainely Standards, we introduce puppies to basic grooming procedures early so they become comfortable with handling and routine care.
What Activities Are Best Suited for Standard Poodles?
One of the things we love most about Standard Poodles is their versatility. These dogs are intelligent, athletic, and eager to participate in family activities.
Many Standard Poodles enjoy:
Walking and hiking
Swimming and water activities
Fetch and retrieving games
Obedience and Rally
Agility and dock diving
Puzzle toys and scent work
Family outings and everyday adventures
Perhaps more important than any specific activity is simply being included. Standard Poodles thrive when they have opportunities to use both their minds and bodies while spending time with the people they love.
